Step-By-Step Guide: Change a Flat Tire 

Let’s Break It Down 

1. Get off the road safely: Pull over somewhere flat (pun intended) and out of traffic. Turn on those hazard lights. 

2. Set your parking brake: You don’t want your car moving while you’re working. 

3. Grab your gear: You’ll need your spare tire, jack, lug wrench, and the wheel wedges (if you have them). 

4. Loosen the lug nuts: Just a bit—for now. Don’t take them off yet. 

5. Jack it up: Place the jack under your car’s designated lift point (check your owner’s manual) and crank it until the flat’s off the ground.   

6. Off with the flat! Take off those loosened lug nuts, then pull the tire straight off. 

7. On with the spare: Line it up, push it into place, then hand-tighten the lug nuts. 

8. Lower the car and tighten again: Once the car’s back on the ground, really tighten those nuts in a crisscross pattern.
